Four and Counting

Good afternoon Instantly Outnumbered readers!  As usual it has been over a month since the last post so there is a lot to cover.  So what has happened in the Waskey household over the past month you ask? A lot.

Julie got back in the running groove by completing a 10k (5.2 miles for you non metric types) in Norfolk in mid June.  Although it was quite an accomplishment, I think that it was an even bigger accomplishment that I was able to handle all three kids by myself in downtown Norfolk, surrounded by hundreds of people for the entire time that Julie was leisurely touring the city on foot.  Considering that we woke the kids up early, drove an hour to Norfolk, fed the kids in their car seats in front of the federal building and then spent a couple hours at the race, we were extremely satisfied at how well the kids handled the whole ordeal.

Another big event that took place within the past couple weeks was the annual Smith family reunion in Maryland.  While we had a great time visiting with everyone we certainly learned a very important lesson - never try to drive 4+ hours with triplets and then attend a function with lots of strangers all in one day.  While the trips did great in the car, the shell shock of exiting the car and immediately getting passed around amongst a bunch of unknown faces was a little more than they could handle.  It is also hard to explain to a room full of family members who are getting to see the kids for the first time that yes, they do need to take a nap.  Overall we had a great time but in hindsight we should have driven up the day before....lesson learned.

On the home front we've had an exciting development as the boys have begun eating solid foods!  While we started out giving solids to all three kids, we had to stop with Nadia because she entered a phase where she was not even drinking her bottle real well, let alone eating peas and peaches.  So far the solids have been limited to one meal a day but that is soon to increase.  Julie has become quite the gourmet baby food chef and so far the boys have tried sweet potatoes (Andrew's favorite), green beans, peaches (Ryan's favorite), prunes and peas.  My favorite thing to do is mix two opposite things together (like green beans and prunes) and then make fun of the boys for eating such strange things.  For some reason they don't seem to pay attention to my taunting.

Finally, on the health front, there have been two major stories from the last month.  First, we met with Nadia's heart surgeons and her surgery has been tentatively set for July 30th.  I say tentatively because the same day that we met with her surgeons, Ryan came down with a fever which gradually spread to Andrew and Nadia.  So as long as Nadia is completely better by her pre-surgery check up on July 24th, she will have her surgery on the 30th.  Now some of you may be wondering why the surgery got moved up from October and it is basically because of her slowed eating habits.  The surgeons did not see a benefit in waiting to the fall if it meant that she would have several months of not eating well.

The second major medical story has been the first real illness amongst the triplets.  Considering that we made it past 7 months before the first sickness we feel that we were pretty lucky.  However, this first round of fun has been a killer.  When Ryan got his fever as mentioned above, we chalked it up to teething since he was not showing signs of any other symptoms.  Later that night however Ryan experienced what we are pretty sure was a febrile seizure.  While we have since learned that febrile seizures occur in some babies due to a quick increase in fever temperature and that they are not harmful to the child, at the time that it happened I was home alone with the kids and understandably  I freaked out.  That episode resulted in the FOURTH call to 911 in the last year.  So after going 30+ years without every calling 911, we have made FOUR calls in the past 365 days.  Welcome to parenthood.  Long story short, Ryan checked out fine at the hospital and after regular doctor visits for Andrew and Nadia, all three appear to be almost over their malady and back to their normal cheery selves.

So enough babbling on about life in a triplet household....I know you want to see the photographic proof of the past month so here you go:

A: Oh no!  We're on camera wearing the same outfit! R: Whatever.

Babysitting is fun...when is this kid's parents coming to pick her up?
